How To: Front Wheel Bearing

This is on a Hyundai I30 1.6 CRDI FRONT NEARSIDE HUB. Im not sure if the hubs are different on petrol models or other engine sizes, but process will be very similar.

Basically its this video and this tool, but Ive added pictures so you can see how the i30 hub and bearing looks.

Basically a stripped hub (yours may have balljoint still fitted):


Chock the hub on wood so that the flange (the bit with wheel studs in) is not touching the floor. You are looking to hammer out the flange from inside the bearing. Use a suitable size socket (32mm if i recall) and hammer the flange out of the bearing.


99.9% of the time, the flange will take the outer race of the bearing with it.



Concentrating on the hub itself for now, remove the circlip. Hammer/chisel (or screwdriver) the clip until it moves, then remove using circlip pilars, or by forcing the clip using the screwdriver/chisel.


Removed clip (damaged corner during removal, new one usually supplied with bearing)

Then its basically as per the video above, which will show it better than I can describe. Sometimes you can just hammer the bearing out (not fussed about damaging it obviously as its getting replaced). Note that the bearing comes out towards the back of the hub, unlike the video but the process is the same.


Bearing out of hub, ready to be cleaned and greased ready for pressing in the new bearing.

Now to remove the outer bearing race from the flange



Basically DIY style, you cut across the outer race and hammer/chisel the race round and off.


Press the new bearing in using the tool as shown in video


Insert the circlip, circlip pilars are needed here really, can be abit fiddly and sometimes a hammer/chisel to get the last bit in is required.


Now you need to re-insert the flange to bearing. You MUST support the rear of the bearing or the flange will force the bearing apart. Using the tool in video, i placed a smaller "disc" from the tool on the rear of the bearing, flat side againist the bearing. Then placed this on top of a support so the hub was facing up. Place the flange squarely into the bearing and afew sharp hammer blows will drift it home.

The "tone" of the noise usually changes when its fully home.



This may not be a DIY job for everyone, but certainly for those who arent afraid to have a go and like to collect tools.

I will add some more detailed pictures when I do the otherside and have more time.
