hi All,

We have a lot of Kangaroos on the roads at the moment, they take fright and jump in front of the car.

Same for cows, sheep etc in other regions,

Im thinking of getting these animal alarms fitted to our cars, is anyone else using them?

They say they can be heard 2km away. Is that true?

Do cyclists hear them?

 Thanks in advance.

Hi Gary, Not sure if you are serious (or tongue in cheek -or both)  :undecided:

I think @Just Rick has had some experience with such things (he also ended up having one of his FD's written off by a roo i think!)

Also @Lakes had a nasty collision with a Roo in one of his 2 FD's and amy have tried them at some stage.

They're ultrasonic so cyclists won't hear anything more than the car's wind, road and engine noises. Operation kicks in at about 50kph. It might be a bit hard to measure range. :whistler:

You know me Dazz, always thinking safety

They sell two for each car. Maybe a row of them would be cool.

Ironically i think i have a couple of similar black ones I bought cheap (who me) years ago after hitting a couple of wallabies (one in my FD and one in a Camry Hybrid)

However, from memory I don't think I used them because I couldn't find anywhere to mount them that didn't look "$hit"

I did my best, you know I strive to please. Not a good day for painting unless the colour is red oxide

I'm yet to survey the cyclists, sorry chief :snigger:

Apparently Tassie is the number one place in the world for road kill (or so I've heard) Not a great statistic and one of the few negative things we hear from tourists.  :disapp:

The stats need to be interpreted properly. With local driving skills the tourists ARE the roadkill, which also tends to silence the critics. :whistler:

Well of course.
Roadkill is the primary source of food for the Tassie Devils.

Years ago I was driving between Townsville and Cairns during one f the worst dry spells they'd ever experienced.
Their was a stretch of highway past Tulley of  about 20 klms which was like driving a slalom course. Although the road was basically straight,  you couldn't go more than about 50 metres without having to dodge a dead too.

I'm a fan of dawn to dusk speed limit reductions in the high risk areas. Even our road which is an 80 kph stretch should be 60 at night in my opinion. I slow to about 60 kph and get seriously harassed at times by big 4WD and utes with bull bars!

A work mate of mine swear that these things work.  He has been driving from Sydney up QLD outback to visit his dad, and have not hit any roos.  I can only take his words for it.  For $40, it is a good investment providing that it works.

Note: Bring along a BBQ, so if it didnt work, at least you can throw a BBQ on the spot.

Dont forget a slab of beers too.

Well, the only roo I've hit was a big un. 6' plus but he was at full crouch when I hit him (or I'd be dead).
Whilst it was about 2 am it's been my experience that it's the hour or so either side of sunset and sunrise that are most dangerous. Not necessarily all night.
I certainly make sure I've got my wits about me around those times, and tend to keep closer to the centre of the road whenever there is no oncoming traffic.

im far more weary of driving in Western Australia at Dusk after driving home from work 4 years ago and hitting a roo around 110km on my Toyota Aurion with a similar device fitted.
Skippy hopped away, and I even drove home. However, $7500 was the repair bill  :whistler: Maybe device worked and kept his brothers away :scared:

If you can't hear it a cyclist won't hear it! all human

only way I know to avoid hitting a kangaroo is drive a bit slower & keep eye out also try not to drive sunrise or sunset. but there is worse, hitting a wombat very bad can roll your car. hitting a pig bad too. but hitting a cow or wild horse a real killer!!

Thanks John, that really cheered us all up.  :yahoo:

Got to confess, I recently saw this device being sold as God's gift to the country motorist. Designed and road tested in China. :stoned:

But I can remember seeing the same thing on Sydney cars in the 1980s. They usually came unstuck and fell off the guard before you could prove their value.

Since we've been getting out and about, I've seen them often.
Some on bonnets, mirrors number plate areas etc.
Some intact,  some not,  Bit of a hit or miss affair ?     :whistler:

So far we have had one "definitely work".

Around here the Wallabies are more considerate than the two or three abreast cyclists  :crazy1:

Given that, I fondly remember someone talking about his car's high wattage amplifier and speaker; it kept replaying the sound of screeching tyres and then a car crash.
Cyclists would go bush, and it could hilariously panic a line of drivers who were stopped at traffic lights.

Sounds highly illegal, but a lot of fun!  :happydance:

In our previous house a neighbour bought an ultra sonic mains powered unit to keep cats and foxes away which was on a timer to come on during the hours of dusk n darkness.

It was a dismal failure - it made absolutely no difference.

I s'pose there is no way you can tell whether it is emitting ultra sonic noise - so would be an easy scam.
