Hi all,

Recently had the torque convert (TC) seal replaced due to a progressive transmission oil leak that got really bad. It was fine for about a week, then slowly started leaking again. Any suggestions on what might be the cause?

Reading the forums I noticed a couple of people reported micro cracking in the TC housing, which required replacing the TC. How common is that for these cars? Would it be easier just to place the whole gearbox with a second hand one in case the input shaft is damaging the seal?

The car has done 255,000 km and for the longest while was running rough until the head gasket was fixed. The massive trans oil leak from the bell housing and COVID price inflation warranted an engine swap and getting the seal replaced. Engine is great now but the oil leak is not fixed.. :(

Furthermore, do you HAVE to remove the subframe when removing the gearbox from the FD diesel? or can it be done with it in place?

Thanks everyone. :)

Factory manual says you need to take subframe off, but someone who has actually removed gearbox could tell the truth. There are many things mentioned In the manual which are not necessary in different jobs...

Just an update. You do have to take the subframe out. We ended up taking it to an autotrans specialist. I'll report back with what they find.

Looks like it was the torque converter was cracked around where the seal goes. :)
